The painting was inspired by the line in the Litany of St Joseph that reads: “St Joseph protector of the Holy Church, pray for us”. It depicts St Joseph, with the Christ child in his arms and holding a pair of Lilies. The two figures are blessing the world and the Vatican as a symbol of the Universal Church which is under the patronage of St Joseph.

Because this painting has been painted on canvas board, to stand upright it needs to be propped up against a wall or shelf, or placed on a stand. It is unable to be hung as is.
